Overview of Sand Key Park
Sand Key Park is definitely one of our very favorite parks in the area! It has a spectacular beach, dog park, fishing piers, a picnic area, a playground and more! See Pinellas Park Services Sand Key Park Website.
The park is on the very northern tip of Sand Key adjacent to Clearwater Pass. Clearwater Pass connects Clearwater Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. You can sit on the docks overlooking Clearwater Pass and watch the boats go by or wet for some fun fishing. There are three fishing piers to choose with a free parking area that is just for the fishing area. It’s a great view of Clearwater Pass if you just want to sit and watch, and you might even see a dolphin swim by!
Beautiful white sand beaches grace the western side of the park where you can walk, lay out your towel, or rent a cabana or umbrella. The park picnic areas are on the eastern side of the park, complete with pavilions, picnic tables, grills and restrooms. There is also a children’s playground and a fenced dog area.
There is also a salt marsh with trails and viewing benches for nature lovers where you can often see herons, anhingas, horned owls, and other native birds and other surprises. Sea turtles nest on the beaches and lay their eggs annually. Sand Key park is the base of operations for the artificial reef program to create reef fishing structures in the Gulf of Mexico. The reefs are enjoyed by divers and fishing enthusiasts and are just a few hundred feet off the beaches.
